It was December or so, in Bali. I stayed there for many months and on this day a bus driver offered to take the four of us staying in a village motel "to the top of the mountain where his family lived". We got in his Volkswagen bus and drove up through terraces, water flowing from one rice paddy down to the next. "Today is market day! A good day to come to my home!" he assured us.
The people seemed tiny and their little stalls were full of batiks, vegetables and fruits, and bright colored birds in cages. We dickered and my friends bought beautiful masks carved in wood. i was so preoccupied with the faces and fabrics and the movement of the people!
Suddenly, a torrential rain hit! The shopkeepers quickly turned their umbrellas against the wind. The shippers didn't leave, they just began to throw food and goods into their baskets which they carried on their heads. Listening to the music of the rain, immersed in the vision of the people running, all in a contented, not a distressed manner. The vibrancy of that moment captured me.
