Pangandarin is a peninsula on the coast of Java that juts out into the Indian Ocean.  The ocean is on both sides, about 1/4 mile each way.  My friends and I stayed in a little village on the peninsula, everyone lives on the beach.  The local men fish out of their outriggers all night long.  They sail out at sunset and return when they feel satisfied with their catch.

Once, at 4 a.m., we heard all this comotion.  We thought something terrible had happened in the village.  Naked children were running in the dawn, down to the beach.  And there we saw their daddy's boat cholk-full of pink fish!  Everyone was so excited!

Instantly the fish market opened to market these fish.  Men stood by smoking clove cigarettes as the filets were cut and set out to dry.  The townspeople began arriving to bid at the auction of whole fish.  The nets had been draped to dry over the sides of the outriggers.

The fishermen entered the auction in order of who had caught the most fish that night.  I will never forget the woman who came last.  She turned around holding one huge fish and her teeth flashed, her mouth seemed full of gold as she smiled!

The revelry ended at 10a.m..  A bucket of fresh lobster was offered with fried potato chips.  We ate the delicious food and swam in the warm Indian Ocean, always a spectacle with our light skin bared.  That evening the fishermen once again pushed out into the sunset and the village people slept.
